Description

Hampden's HLCF Classic Overproof rum has a high ester content of around 400-600 gr/hlpa - for this release, the ester content is 476 gr/hlpa, in no small part due to the long wild yeast fermentations practised at the distillery.

With notes of new car leather, wet earth, and oak, this traditional, honest rum embodies the essence of Jamaica's rum-making heritage—a culmination of over 260 years of tropical expertise. But it's been fermented for a longer time (as it says on the label), so the esters are quite noticeable, too much for my taste.Best enjoyed sipped neat, but makes a delicious full flavoured Rum Old Fashioned, or can be used to bring full flavour and life to a rum punch / tiki style drink such as a Mai Tai. At Hampden, fermentation is like a dream for anyone who can grasp the magic and mystery of this process that can transform flour into bread, grapes into wine and fermented sugarcane into rum. Despite the name here, this spirit is surprisingly elegant while possessing an undeniable intensity as well. The banana only really comes in with the taste along with the typical Hampden flavours hiding under the most pronounced burn, the burnt tyres, and an oily-ness, all moving into a long finish.

The rum has been aged for 8 years in Jamaica in a tropical climate, which is equivalent to almost 25 years of maturation in the European climate. The palate has intense fruit: pineapple, apple, pear, mango and papaya stewed down into a thick jam.If you are a resident of another country or region, please select the appropriate version of Tripadvisor for your country or region in the drop-down menu.

owned by the Hussey family, acquired Hampden Estate via public bid through divestment procedures of the Jamaica Sugar Company assets, owned by the Government of Jamaica. They can be aged or unaged depending on the rules or regulations of the country where the rum is made. Cost was comparable with one of the basic cruise tours, however this was better value as it included the lunch and was much more atmpspheric. Just to clarify the tasting notes, this rum isn’t that sweet or even sweetened, it’s just the perceived flavours.
