Finlay is plagued by apparently devoted but ultimately faithless women who seek to attach him in romantic relationships. I bought this book after memories of watching the TV series years ago and watching them again more recently.

Both are about Finlay’s adventures as a small town Scottish doctor in the early 20th century - yet they couldn’t be more different. Unfortunately, I had also grown tired of reading about him, and set down the book without finishing. He's the kind of upstart young man who is featured, daily, in the newspaper for saving a kitten while simultaneously performing an emergency tracheotomy on a small child. Finlay’s Casebook,” actually contains two different books - Adventures of a Black Bag (1969) and Dr. A chronic duodenal ulcer prompted a career switch and he began writing books, TV and film scripts, including the Oscar-nominated The Citadel.

It should be pointed out that the stories here, although the basis of many of the early episodes, are not the same as the stories in the TV series just in case you were expecting a novelisation of that series.Dr Finlay's Casebook is a delightful collection of episodic stories of Dr Finlay and his life in the fictional Scottish village of Tannochbrae during the inter-war years and based on A. Andrew Cruickshank is the crusty senior Doctor Cameron and Barbara Mullen is the unflappable Janet, housekeeper at Arden House medical practice. In contrast to other medical dramas of the period, it was set in a time before the foundation of the National Health Service, in the fictional Scottish settlement of Tannochbrae. It was coarse, unbelievable, and involved the character assassination of all of the characters from the first book and a bunch of new ones besides. Essential viewing then it was based on the tales of AJ Cronin, himself a qualified doctor and an accomplished author.
