But he's also shy and doesn't know how to approach her - until her pet, the tortoise Alfie, gives him the perfect chance. I don't care what anybody says, raising kids is hard, but raising kids that are kind and considerate is infinitely harder. Mrs Silver runs inside and weighs her pet, and is surprised to find that Alfie now weighs 27 ounces (770 g), more than double the weight he was before. Then, every night, he uses his long-armed tortoise grabber to lift Alfie up to his apartment where he feeds him delicious food. The kids thought it was hilarious because it was about a man being in love (cue the 30 voices shouting "yuk!

Hoppy gets all twitterpated hearing this, so he lies to her, telling her he knows a magic spell that will help her tortoise grow.In the film, a retired bachelor ( Dustin Hoffman) falls in love with his neighbour, a widow ( Judi Dench), who keeps a tortoise as a companion after the death of her husband. She lives in the flat below his, and he frequently leans over his balcony and exchanges polite conversations with Mrs Silver, but his courage fails him whenever he prepares to hint at his true feelings for her. It features Dustin Hoffman, as Mr Hoppy and Judi Dench as Mrs Silver, with James Corden as the narrator. Lie to her, trick her, steal from her, make her obligated to you, then you get to be in a relationship!

But even so, I was fairly confident I could do better than Dahl's original "trick her into marrying you" storyline. Over the next 8 weeks, Mr Hoppy continues to switch Mrs Silver's current pet with a slightly larger tortoise, but she still does not perceive that her pet is growing in size. Steering away from the completely silly, the story holds a strong possibility of truth, though one can never know what ideas Dahl uses for his writing. Do we really want to teach them that the way to have a healthy relationship is to first lie, then steal something beloved, then GIVE THAT THING AWAY? He lives alone in his apartment, tending to his plants on his balcony and has a big secret, he is secretly in love with his downstairs neighbour, Mrs Silver.I bought this after watching the Roald Dahl's most marvellous books for his 100th birthday, and because we were doing Roald Dahl day at school. In my version, they also worked together to publish a book of recipes for tortoises, and used that money to start a tortoise park, where Mr. Mr Hoppy brings all the tortoises back to his flat and installs them in a makeshift corral in his living room. I read this for an Instagram readalong of Dahl books, which is going on for the entire month of August. While growing up I read multiple Roald Dahl books, with James and the Giant Peach landing at my all-time favorite, but didn't happen across Esio Trot until now.

In 2015 it was adapted by Richard Curtis into a BBC television film, Roald Dahl's Esio Trot, featuring Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench as the couple, with James Corden narrating. I'm really a huge fan of Roald Dahl's so I want to read as many of his stories as I can, while at the same time I'm dreading running out of stories to read. Overall, Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot is a good, simple story that children aged 7 to 9 years old will adore, a love story inspired by Alfie the tortoise. In the novel, Mr Hoppy's ruse of switching tortoises to fool Mrs Silver into thinking that hers is growing is successful and she never discovers the truth. The following day, when Mrs Silver leaves for work, Mr Hoppy selects a tortoise from his living room that weighs exactly 15 ounces (430 g).Another of my favourite Dahl stories as a kid as Mr Hoppy a shy old man develops a bonkers scheme to impress he’s neighbour Mrs. I read this one as a child and loved it so this summer when I was looking for read aloud books for my then 5 year old this one made my short list.

It was adapted by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer, and filming took place in May 2014 in London. He has won many prizes, including the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration, the Eleanor Farjeon Award and the Kate Greenaway Medal, and in 1999 he was appointed the first Children’s Laureate. In this book it features Mr Hoppy who is hopelessly in love with Mrs Silver however there is a problem. In 1999 he became the first ever Children's Laureate and in 2013 he was knighted for services to illustration. Despite Roald Dahl having enjoined his publishers not to "so much as change a single comma in one of my books", in February 2023 Puffin Books, a division of Penguin Books, announced it would be re-writing portions of many of Dahl's children's novels, changing the language to, in the publisher's words, "ensure that it can continue to be enjoyed by all today. He taught illustration for over twenty years at the Royal College of Art, of which he is an honorary professor. When I was in Grade 2, which was eons ago, my library teacher would read Esio Trot to us in a dramatic, West-End tier performance voice and we would squeal with excitement. Mr Hoppy is a shy elderly man who lives alone in an apartment, tending to his many plants, which have been the center of his life since he retired from his job in a bus garage several years before.
